Advanced Social Widget is an all-in-one social networking widget that allows your visitors to subscribe to your RSS feed, Follow you on Twitter, visit your Facebook Page, visit your Google+ page and easily share your site to the major social networking sites.

You can define what social network sites you want to show and what icons to display. Define whether to display the social networking site name under each of the icons. Visitors can Follow you on Twitter, subscribe to your Feedburner RSS Feed and view you Feedburner RSS Feed. You can also define the width of the widget making it suitable for all website themes and templates.

If you have a Feedburner RSS feed, you can allow your visitors to quickly and easily subscribe to your RSS feed. All the visitor needs to do is enter their email address and click the “Subscribe” button. A window will be opened where the visitor can subscribe to your feed.

Installation

The script has been written in a PHP class making it easy for you to port it over and use it in many pages. Installation is a breeze and only take a few seconds to configure. I’ve taken the time to also detail the basic usage steps in this screencast, so if you get lost, please watch the video for pointers:

 

Configuration & Usage

The script is simple to use and only requires a few configuration fields completed to use all of it’s available features.

Open the Advanced Social Widget configuration file located in “includes/advanced-social-widget_config.php”.
This is the main configuration file for the script. Each defined constant has an example usage listed in the comments.

Once you have changed the initial configuration settings you need to include the files into your current website. (Scroll down for definitions of script constants and settings). To do this follow these instructions.

1. Open the php file you wish the widget to be displayed in. In the <head> section of this document add the following code:

The Widget Settings

This is the core of the Advanced Social Widget WordPress plugin. Here you can configure all the settings for the plugin. The widget panel is divided into two sections, the General Settings & the Social Networking Icons section.

  • General Settings:
    • WEBSITEURL: This is the url of the website you are using the script with.You must supply the full URL (E.G http://www.wpinsite.com)
    • WEBSITETITLE: This is the title of the website you are using the script with. (E.G WPInsite – Ultimate WordPress Resources)
    • WIDGETWIDTH: This is where you determine the actual width in pixels of the widget box.
    • WIDGETTITLE: You can change the default h3 title of the widget. The default title is: “Subscribe for latest updates”.
    • NEW_WINDOW: Here you can define whether you wants the links to the social networking sites to open in a new browser tab or windows when a visitor clicks on one of the five icons. Enter true or false.
    • DISPLAY_FEEDBURNER: Define whether to display FeedBurner newsletter signup box. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_GOOGLE: You can define whether you wish to display the Google +1 button. The URL for the button is used from the WEBSITEURL constant.
    • DISPLAY_GOOGLEPLUS: Define whether to display Google+ icon. This will link to your Google+ page Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_FACEBOOK: Define whether to display Facebook icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_TWITTER: Define whether to display Twitter icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_DELICIOUS: Define whether to display Delicious icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_STUMBLEUPON: Define whether to display StumbleUpon icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_PINTEREST: Define whether to display Pinterest icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_LINKEDIN: Define whether to display LinkedIn icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_ICONS: You have the option to total hide all five social networking icons. By default these are enabled. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • DISPLAY_ICON_TOOLTIPS: Define whether to display a fancy jQuery tooltip when you mouse over each icon. Enter true to display, false to hide.
    • FEEDBURNER_USERNAME: Enter the username to your FeedBurner account (e.g wpinsite).
    • FACEBOOK_URL: Enter the full URL to your Facebook page. (e.g http://www.facebook.com/wpinsite OR http://www.facebook.com/pages/WPInsite/168033423259157).
    • TWITTER_ID: Enter your Twitter username here (e.g wpinsite).
    • GOOGLE_PLUS_PAGE: Define your Google Plus Page URL. (E.G https://plus.google.com/u/1/b/109407367055945364164/).

Requirements

In order to work, Advanced Social Widget WordPress plugin needs the following requirements:

  • PHP version 5+

Frequently Asked Questions

= How to I hide certain icons and their functionality? =
To disable just a single icon and it’s functionality simply change the configuration setting from true to false and that icon will not be displayed.

= What URL is the Google +1 feature using? =
The Google +1 feature uses the WEBSITEURL defined constant setting.

= Part of the Widget box is missing or overflowing outside my sidebar =
You have the ability to define the actual width of the widget box. By default the width of the widget width is set to 250px.
If part of the widget box is mssing or overflowing change the width of the WIDGETWIDTH settings so that it matches the size of area you wish to display the script in. Try decreasing the widget box width size to say 220. There is no need to add the (px) pixels as this is added automatically for you.

= The hover effect over the icons isn’t displaying isn’t displaying =
You need to make sure you include both the jQuery library and the script javascript file into your website page. To do this include the follow code in your website document <head> section.
